How to choose an ecommerce platform

Compare ecommerce platforms on plan price, per-sale fees, free plan or trial, what you can build, support and who stands behind the product.

Start with the trade-off you really pay for

Every platform in this group splits your bill between a subscription you pay for access and a cut taken each time you sell something. That split is the first thing to settle, because a cheaper subscription can still cost more once your order volume builds. Settle a pair of figures for each vendor: the price of the plan they label as their ecommerce plan, and the fee taken per transaction.

Write the two figures next to each other before you read any feature list. The ecommerce platforms ranking groups these vendors in one place, and the steps below take the same comparison apart piece by piece, so you can apply it to your own situation.

Compare the plan prices you will actually see

Listed ecommerce plan prices differ widely. Shopify sits at $39, ClickFunnels at $97, Ko-fi at $12 and sm-web.nl at €1,100. Entry level prices follow the same pattern, with $39 for Shopify, $97 for ClickFunnels, $12 for Ko-fi and €350 for sm-web.nl.

Look at the currency attached to each figure as well. These listings are quoted in different currencies, so a raw number comparison across vendors can mislead you. Placing them side by side inside a wider set helps: ecommerce plan prices across the listings run €0.45 to €1,100, and entry prices run €0.49 to €613. A vendor quoted near the top of that span is a deliberate investment, while one quoted near the bottom is a lighter commitment.

Transaction fees decide who wins on volume

Here is where a low plan price can be misleading. Shopify takes a transaction fee of 0.2% to 2% and Ko-fi takes 0% to 5%, both charged on top of the subscription. ClickFunnels charges 0%, so for a seller with steady traffic the plan price is closer to the whole cost of selling.

Read these fees as a rate on turnover rather than a fixed cost, and the ranking of vendors can flip as your order volume grows. For context, transaction fees across the wider set run 0% to 10%. If you expect modest sales, the higher subscription with a lighter per-sale charge may still come out ahead. If you expect strong volume, the vendor with no per-sale fee gains ground quickly.

Free plan or trial, and what that says about the model

Ko-fi offers a free plan, and its pricing model is built around that free tier, so you can open a shop and see how it behaves before spending anything. ClickFunnels and Shopify do not offer a free plan, and both are trial based instead. The trial lengths differ sharply: 14 days for ClickFunnels against 3 days for Shopify. sm-web.nl has no free plan either.

Treat the free plan as a filter rather than a verdict. It tells you a vendor is comfortable letting you start with nothing, which suits a first shop or a side project. A longer trial tells you a vendor expects a longer evaluation before you pay, which suits a shop with a longer buying cycle and a more involved build.

Check what you can actually build

Builder type matters more than most shoppers expect, because it decides whether a platform can carry the whole customer journey. ClickFunnels covers the widest ground, with site, store and landing options in one product. Shopify works as site and store, and Ko-fi offers site and store building options.

Map that against your own plan for the store. A single storefront with a straightforward catalogue is served well by a site and store pairing. If you also need dedicated landing pages for campaigns, the vendor that includes them in the same tool saves you from running a second system and paying for it twice.

Support style and the kind of seller each one targets

Support shape tells you how you will get unstuck. Shopify offers chat, phone and help centre, the broadest set in this group, including phone alongside live chat, which helps if you are stuck mid sale. ClickFunnels offers email, chat and help centre with chat in the mix, and Ko-fi offers email, help centre and community without live chat.

Audience fit completes this check. Shopify is listed for beginners, small business and enterprise, so it also serves larger organisations, while ClickFunnels is listed for beginners and small business and sm-web.nl for beginners and small business. If you are a small team without a support desk, a help centre and a community can carry you further than phone support ever will.

Look at who stands behind the product

Vetting the company behind the platform costs you a moment and settles long term questions about support and stability. Shopify trades as Shopify Inc., is registered in CA and was founded in 2006. ClickFunnels operates as Etison LLC d/b/a ClickFunnels from US, founded in 2013. Ko-fi is run by Ko-fi Labs Limited, registered in GB and founded in 2011. sm-web.nl was founded in 2022, making it the newest operation in the group.

A long trading history suggests a mature support and billing setup. A newer operation may be more flexible on pricing, but plan terms are worth reading carefully before you build a catalogue on top of them.

Turn the checks into a shortlist

You now have a repeatable method: plan price, per-sale fee, free plan or trial, builder type, support channels and the company behind it. Weight those in the order that matters to your shop, then read the full write ups for the vendors that survive. The Shopify review, the ClickFunnels review, the Ko-fi review and the sm-web.nl review each set out the same details in a form you can check against your own figures.

Return to the ecommerce platforms ranking once more before you commit, and confirm that the vendor you picked still sits in the price band your budget allows after its transaction fees are added in.
